The Agafay Desert holds almost no sand. Its floor is hamada — sun-baked marl and limestone, grey where the light is flat and rose where it is low. The formation lies roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Marrakech, on the last plateau before the High Atlas rises.
Jbel Toubkal, at 4,167 metres the highest peak in North Africa, closes the southern horizon.
