Agafay holds no dunes. Its desert is hammada — a floor of compacted marl and limestone lifted from a Cretaceous seabed by the same tectonic pressure that raised the High Atlas behind it.

The ground is too poor for agriculture and too far from municipal water, so what grew instead was a portable architecture: goat-hair khaïma tents, kilim floors, brass lanterns hung from cedar poles, everything struck and re-pitched as the terrain demands. The evening programme borrows from older forms rather than inventing new ones. Gnaoua musicians work iron qraqeb castanets against a three-string guembri, a rhythm carried into Morocco across the Sahara. Tagine, harira and sweet mint tea are served the way the camp crews themselves eat, cooked over coals at the back of the tent line.
