The Agafay Desert holds no sand. Its floor is compacted marl and hamada rock, a dried lakebed of the Haouz plain that hardened into pale grey ridges roughly 40 kilometres southwest of Marrakech.
Geologists read these slopes as the sediment of an inland sea; travellers read them as the closest thing to the Sahara that a short drive from the Jemaa el-Fnaa allows.
The plateau sits at around 600 metres, tipped toward the High Atlas. On clear evenings the Toubkal massif rises behind the ridgelines, snow-streaked into spring. Rainfall is scarce, under 250 millimetres a year, and the argan and olive holdings that edge the desert depend on the Ourika and N'Fis drainage rather than the sky. Berber families have grazed sheep and goats across this hamada for centuries, following seasonal wells and dry riverbeds. Their settlements — low, flat-roofed, the colour of the ground — remain scattered between the camps.
Encampment tourism arrived late. The first permanent bivouacs were pitched here in the early 2010s, borrowing the vocabulary of Saharan nomad camps: canvas khaimas, woven kilims, brass lanterns, low tables of hammered copper.
