The Agafay Desert has no dunes. Thirty kilometres south-west of Marrakech, the sand that most travellers picture never appears. In its place lies hammada: a crust of grey marl and limestone, scored by dry riverbeds and folded into low hills that were once the bed of a shallow sea.

The land was worked long before it was visited. Berber herders grazed goats and sheep across the marl, moving between wells and seasonal pasture, and the wide tracks that quad bikes now follow began as droving routes. In the 1930s, French engineers dammed the Oued Nfis to create the reservoir at Lalla Takerkoust, twenty minutes west, altering how water reached these valleys. Kasbah walls of rammed earth still mark the older settlements at the desert's edge, raised from the same clay the plateau is made of.
What draws attention now is the sky. Agafay lies far enough from Marrakech's light spill that the Milky Way is visible on clear nights, and film crews have used the plateau as stand-in ground for lunar and Martian scenes. Tented camps arrived over the past decade, their canvas pitched in Saharan style even though the true Sahara begins some four hundred kilometres further south.
